The DoF Signed a MOU to Collaborate to Reduce Labor Vulnerability to Human Trafficking

On Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at Anantara Siam Hotel, Bangkok, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Fisheries, As a representative of the Department of Fisheries, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate to reduce labor vulnerability to human trafficking together with the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Program in Thailand Supported by USAID Thailand Counter Trafficking in Persons (USAID Thailand CTIP) operated by Winrock International Thailand.

The MOU signing ceremony this time occurred with the cooperation of the 3 agencies mentioned above, The objective is to develop the ability to communicate and request assistance to workers working on fishing vessels to install a supplement to the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) via a mobile application using satellite signals instead of regular telephone signals so that they can request assistance in the contracted fishing area the phone cannot be reached.

This project has piloted the communication technology on board the vessel (Connectivity at Sea), which USAID Thailand CTIP operated in Phuket between 2019 - 2022. Therefore, signing this MOU is to expand cooperation with all 3 agencies in jointly promoting and expanding the pilot project to various fishing areas in the area of ​​22 seaside provinces.
