The Director-General of the DMCR Ordered to Investigate of the Problem of Marine Debris Traps

On November 2nd, 2022, the Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources assigned to the Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Institute. the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center of the Lower Gulf of Thailand (Songkhla) and the Office of Marine and Coastal Resources 4 expedited investigations to determine the cause and solve the problems that arise urgently. In the past, the Department of Marine and Coast has been successful in setting up marine debris traps in many areas. as a result, Songkhla Province saw the benefits that occurred therefore requesting cooperation for the Marine Resources Research Center and the Lower Gulf of Thailand request provincial budgets to use for operations within Songkhla province.

To reduce the amount of waste that will flow into the sea and pushed to propose a project to manage marine debris in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand as well in order to reduce the amount of marine waste sustainably by requesting from the provincial group budget to operate in 5 provinces in the southern part of the Gulf of Thailand, namely Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla.


Before starting the project Staff of the Marine Resources Research Center and the Lower Gulf of Thailand surveyed the suitability of the area to place marine debris traps and meet with local government organizations in the area to request approval for the operation and initially coordinated that if such a project has completed a research study to formulate measures to manage marine debris waste traps will be provided for use in the area and will be delivered in accordance with the relevant regulations.
